When Magic Gets Personal: A Magician for Private Parties
There’s a big difference between performing a trick for somebody and creating a moment that feels as though it could only have happened to them.
That’s one of the things I love about being a magician for private parties. The magic can become part of the celebration itself, rather than simply entertainment happening in the room.
This clip from Elle’s birthday is a lovely example.
Her husband had booked me as a surprise birthday present for her. She didn’t know I was going to be there, and neither of them knew where this particular piece of magic was heading.
I gave the cards to Elle’s husband and, from that point on, I never touched them.
He did everything.
He made every decision and every choice, all the way through.
Eventually, he was left with four cards face down on the table.
Then he turned them over.
E L L E.
His wife’s name.
He’d made all the choices. He’d handled the cards. And somehow, he’d ended up spelling out the name of the person he was there to celebrate.
Neither of them saw that coming.
Their reaction is the bit I love.
Making close-up magic personal
When I perform close-up magic at a birthday or private party, I don’t want it to feel like I’ve simply arrived with a collection of tricks and started working through them.
The best moments feel connected to the people who are actually there.
Sometimes that might mean somebody’s name appearing somewhere impossible. Sometimes the person celebrating becomes central to what happens. At other events, it can be something completely different.
The point isn’t simply to make the trick more difficult or more elaborate.
It’s to make the magic mean something to the person experiencing it.
A playing card appearing somewhere unexpected can be a great piece of magic.
But making every decision yourself, handling the cards yourself and then discovering that they spell out your wife’s name?
That feels rather different.
A birthday magician can be part of the surprise
Magic also works particularly well when the entertainment itself is part of the birthday surprise.
Elle thought she was celebrating her birthday. Her husband knew there was one more present coming.
And unlike something you unwrap and put on a shelf, this was a present she could experience with the people celebrating with her.
That’s one of the things I enjoy about performing at birthdays, anniversaries and other private celebrations. Close-up magic happens right amongst the guests, creating moments of surprise and laughter that people experience together.
And sometimes, as Elle and her husband discovered, the magic can become very personal indeed.
